How To Add Categories and Listings To Your Directory

So now that you’ve got your Directory all set-up and a list of businesses to get entered, here are some very easy steps on how to create Categories and Listings.

Directory Home Page ::

Your directory will be located at a URL similar to the following: citymomsblog.com/{cityname}/directory

How To Add Categories ::

  • Go to your WP Dashboard in the far left toolbar find the Directory tab and select Category
  • Select the Blue “+Add Category” button in the upper right corner
  • On the Add Category page, fill out the following fields:
    • Title :: The name of your category as you’d like it to appear.
    • Category Description :: This can be added in the text box below the title field.
    • Thumbnail :: You can set a custom graphic for each category.
    • Map Marker :: You can set a unique icon to appear on the map view for each category.
    • Parent Category :: Here you can set categories as sub-categories of a parent. See Places to Eat / Kids Eat Free example below.
    • Publish the Category.
    • Example categories :: 
      • Birthday Parties
      • Child Care
      • Fitness
      • Mommy and Me
      • Free Activities
      • Health
      • Mom Groups
      • Photography
      • Places to Eat
        • Kids Eat Free (Sub-category)
      • Shopping

How To Add Directory Listings ::

Once you have some categories established, you can easily add directory listings for your businesses.

  • Go to your WP Dashboard in the far left toolbar find the Directory tab and select “Add Listing”
  • On the Add Listing page, add the following ::
    • Enter A Title :: Typically the business name
    • Brief Description :: Typically amenities, business details, etc.
    • Location :: Enter the address of the business
      • Click Find on map to pinpoint geo co-ordinates
    • Categories :: Select a category for your listing
      • Note category must be added ahead of time through the WordPress dashboard.
      • Note you specify multiple categories by clicking +Add More.
    • Contact Info :: Phone Number, Mobile Number, Fax Number, Email, Website
    • Social Accounts :: Twitter, Facebook and Google+ profiles
    • Photos :: Upload a graphic for this location (i.e. logo, location pic, etc.)
  • Author dropdown select who authored the listing (Typically your Admin account)
  • Featured :: Featured listings get a special tag and background color on the main category listing page (http://www.jaxmomsblog.com/around-town/listing/ponte-vedra-plastic-surgery)
  • Select Publish to make the listing live
